Encryption is not only used by top corperations or government agencies, ordinary people have been using encrytion software in their everyday lives. I myself use that is publicly avaiable. The encyption software that everyone is using is contained within their internet browers. I think it's a 128 bit encyption. This is good enough for the general public. The current controversy about this encryption software is that law enforcement was to have a key that could unlock the encryption. This gets into the debate about the power of police and the right to privacy.
